Kitty Star of the Week for Sep. 26 - Oct. 2, 2004

This week our star is Orson. His person writes,

"Orson is about 3.5 years, but I don't know for sure. He is only interested in eating his Iam's. He is quite acrobatic, and loves to put on a show for guests with his toys.

"I lost my first cat Boris to cancer last October. What followed was probably the worst month of my life. Boris had been my buddy for ten years, but at age 14 he came down with larynx cancer which was untreatable. I miss him still. He was a small guy, but extremely vocal and affectionate.

"I made the trek to the Anti-Cruelty Society in downtown Chicago last November. I had my eye on a black female, but she was more interested in just getting out of the cage than me! There was this huge male tabby in the cage next to her that would not let me be without paying HIM the attention. I looked around, tried out a few others but kept coming back to him. I decided to sleep on it; I was pretty overwhelmed by the events of the past couple of months.

"When I came back next day, an orange tabby I had looked at was already spoken for. So we took 'Baby' out and he melted into my lap, holding on with those huge paws for dear life! A couple big guys shopping for their kids took one look at us and said 'Looks like you got yourself a cat!'"

"He was promptly re-christened "Orson" - obviously, I am a big movie fan. We had a brief scare when the Feline HIV tests came back positive. After losing Boris, I was a wreck. Then my vet did the more expensive - and accurate - test and he was free and clear. The others were apparently false positives. WHEW!!!

"One thing Orson loves to do is go for a walk, and I am not kidding! He took to his harness very quickly and now just trots along down the sidewalk. He is a big favorite of the neighborhood kids. The downside is, every time I move he is running to the door and crying to go out. Such is life ... he was free roaming once, which is how he got to Anti-Cruelty Society to start with. Never again -- my cats are and will always be house cats."
