This week, meet Oliver. He is 4 months old in the photo, and

David Leese shares this photo of "The Ultimate Cat Toy:"
He writes,
"The inspiration for the sculpture first came from a visit to a mall pet store. I was so disappointed with the lack of variety in the larger scale cat toys, I decided what we really needed was an "Ultimate Cat Toy". I wanted to design something that would be the equivalent of upgrading from a Ford to a Lincoln.
"The sculpture is made from a variety of hard and softwoods including birch, redwood, maple and fir. My approach to the design was to study some of the play habits of my own cat and look for new ways to incorporate them into the design. Things like playing in between the balusters of our Victorian's staircase, climbing ladders and steps, and their natural curiosity for hidden spaces were incorporated into the final design.
"Just as important, though, was trying to illustrate our tendency, as owners, to get carried away when it comes to our pets. Our passion for our companions and the natural tendency to overindulge them just naturally lead to a work of art like "The Ultimate Cat Toy". The sculpture, which stands 6 feet tall, has been released in a very limited edition of 10 pieces. Each piece features different woods and finishes that emphasize their individuality.

Some cat facts...
- "Snub" means the short noses seen in some of the longhaired varieties.
- The Himalayn breed resulted from crossing Siamese and Persians.
- "Cat" in German is "Katze."
- The nutritional need of cats depends upon their age, size and activity level. But on average, the adult cat needs about 30 calories per pound. An 8 pound cat needs about 240 calories/day.
- Cats have 4 kinds of hairs: down hairs are closest to the skin; awn hairs are in the middle of the coat; guard hairs keep the cat dry; vibrissae are the hairs that make up whiskers.
- Change your cat's food only gradually by mixing the new food into the current food in small quantities at first. Abrupt changes can cause diarrhea.
- If a cat's tail is up with a relaxed tip, he/she is saying, "Happy to see you!"
- The first cat show was held in 1871 in London, England.
